ISLAM AND SCIENCE

Abstract
In this series of lectures on “Islam and Science”, I will explore the question of Islam and Science from various angles, perspectives and dimensions, while referring to the accumulated literature on the subject over the years. The relationship between Islam and Science will be viewed from its historical, philosophical and contemporary aspects.
I will begin by looking at the relationship between Islam and Science from a historical perspective; looking at how science was transmitted to Islamic civilisation from Greek sources, its development within Islam itself, the question of the place of science in medieval Islamic culture, and the re-transmission of Greco-Islamic science to European civilisation beginning in the 12th century. The historical section will end with a discussion on the decline of Islamic science, and the debates surrounding the question of why Islamic civilisation did not give rise to the Scientific Revolution.
Continuing on the historical path, I will examine the rise of colonialism by western powers, its impact on Islamic civilisation, and how the relationship between Islam and science was affected by western imperialism. The importance of reflecting on the influence of colonialism on science in Islam lies mainly in its impact on the development of science in Islamic culture and civilisation, and the attempt by Muslim societies to recover authenticity in a post-colonial world.
Next, I will look at the responses made by Muslim intellectuals on the question of Islam and Science, the issues discussed, and the resolutions made. Philosophical and epistemological questions on the nature of scientific and religious knowledge, and the compatibility of science and Islam will be discussed. The responses made towards modern science and technology by Muslim intellectuals will then be compared to the responses made by western historians and philosophers of science, and lessons will be drawn from the comparison.
Finally, I will end by looking at Islam and science from a contemporary perspective, looking at the issues that have plagued the relationship between Islam and science in the contemporary world, which not only involved historical and philosophical aspects/dimensions, but also relates to economic development and social policies.
